Dual-use: SlimPort interface expands smartphones into PCs

Computers and mobile phone accessories (keyboards, headsets, etc.) have huge market prospects in China, and these products are currently designed with many different wireless and wired interface standards. The choice of interface needs to weigh the bandwidth, power consumption and cost. Recently, at the 2013 Mobile Application and Technology Forum, Analogix (Silicon Valley Digital Model) demonstrated its latest SlimPort interface technology, which has great advantages in terms of bandwidth, power consumption and cost.

Li Xiudong, manager of Silicon Valley Digital-Mode Semiconductor (China) Co., Ltd. China, said that SlimPort has a huge market prospect in China - 90% of computer and mobile phone accessories are produced in the Asia-Pacific region, and 70% in the Pearl River Delta region. market share. Different from previous computers using multiple interfaces, the design of branded mobile phones is now a simple route (on the one hand, many interfaces may not be used, on the other hand, the reasons for cost reduction), and all the complicated functions are by peripherals. achieve. This has brought huge market opportunities to Shenzhen, because the foundation of Shenzhen's peripherals for mobile devices and PC devices has become ingrained.

Li Xiudong pointed out that both wired and wireless communications have their own advantages and disadvantages. In the field of multi-screen interaction, wireless communication eliminates the cable connection, but this does not mean that all additional costs are saved. For example, when the iPhone is connected to the TV, it needs to be equipped with an Apple TV set-top box; Huawei and Xiaomi mobile phones are connected to the TV. Also, you need to match the corresponding port. At the same time, for users, they don't care what technology is used in the product, but they need to be plug-and-play and easy to use.

The biggest drawback of wireless is that it covers the idea of too many PC eras - users need to configure, which affects the convenience of the product. At the same time, the bandwidth of wireless is limited, and the bandwidth of wired is definitely greater than wireless. Wireless communication is based on the IEEE 802.11 standard, and the maximum rate is only 540 Mbps (WiFi HDMI cost is too high, not suitable for mass market applications in the short term), while transmitting 720p video data requires 2.25 Gbps (1080p requires 4.5G, 4K2K requires 6G) bandwidth. The 540 Mbps channel cannot achieve such a large data transmission and can only be compressed. In this way, on the one hand, resources are consumed, and on the other hand, data is lost, thereby affecting the user experience. In addition, wireless power consumption is too large for long-term data transmission.

In contrast, cable increases hardware costs but saves on software costs. A pair of USB differential lines can transmit 6.75 Gbps of data. By adding $5 in cost (mobile phone internal chip + external Dongle), you can expand your phone to PC, and the reliability of the cable is high, and it can be plug and play.

The SlimPort interface is a product derived from mobile applications based on the DisplayPort standard. The interface mainly uses three lines: two differential signal lines and one password line. Compared with some one-way transmission interfaces, its two-way communication mechanism (for cost reduction, it needs to make a single-issue or single-receive mode for peripherals, and eliminate unnecessary data), so that the keyboard, mouse, and All peripherals, such as monitors and 100M Ethernet, are connected to the phone, enabling applications such as 4K movies on mobile phones, super cool games, or PCs.

SlimPort can extend multiple interfaces while providing docking for different peripherals. Analogix's Dock product offers three USB ports, an HDMI port and an Ethernet port for keyboard/mouse, display and Internet docking. If you need to mount multiple peripherals, you can increase the bandwidth on the same USB cable - the bandwidth of a pair of USB differential lines can be increased to 25Gbps.
