In order to meet the ever-increasing reliability and safety requirements in an extremely demanding automotive environment, TE Connectivity 's business unit, TE Circuit Protection, has introduced a high-current reflowable thermal protection (High-Current Reflowable Thermal Protection). , HCRTP ) device. This powerful HCRTP device (model: RTP200HR010SA) is ideal for high power, high current automotive applications such as ABS modules, glow plugs and engine cooling fans. The HCRTP device is capable of withstanding up to 90A holding current at room temperature (23oC) and withstanding 45A at 140oC. In addition to helping automotive electronics designers meet the stringent AECQ automotive standards, including AECQ vibration testing, surface mountable HCRTP devices speed up the installation process.

HCRTP devices are based on the reflow soldering thermal protection (RTP) technology of the TE Circuit Protection Division, which helps protect electronic systems in the event of thermal runaway events in power FETs, capacitors, or other power components that fail due to increased resistance. Innovative technology uses a one-time electrical activation heat sensitive process. Prior to activation, HCRTP devices were able to withstand lead-free (Pb) reflow processes up to 260 ° C without opening. After installation, the one-time electrical activation process initiates a lower 210 °C thermal threshold. After activation, usually at the end of the reflow soldering line test, the HCRTP device will open when the critical junction temperature exceeds 210 °C.

HCRTP devices are packaged in a low side (up to 3.7mm) package that can be mounted using industry standard lead-free surface mount devices (SMD) and reflow soldering assembly processes. In contrast, radial lead thermal fuses must be installed after reflow, so HCRTP devices enable a cost-effective and easy installation process while optimizing thermal coupling to printed circuit boards (PCBs).

"With the increase in the power of automotive electronics, thermal protection devices must handle higher currents to maintain stability, for example, in the event of a fault or failure, combined with ABS," said Faraz Hasan, senior manager of global automotive strategic marketing at TE Circuit Protection. The integrated ABS module for stability regulation and electronic parking brake generates a large amount of heat on the input connector or power MOSFET device. The current is extremely high in the event of a component failure, and HCRTP devices with high current withstand capability can help Preventing potential damage events caused by thermal runaway is an important consideration for automotive electronics designers who must meet AECQ testing standards."
