Bob Steele, head of Optoelectronics at Strategy Unlimited, speaks at the "Strategies in Light" conference and forecasts the high-brightness (HB) market for LED components. In 2011, specifically, in the next five years, the market for backlights is promising, and more and more general lighting fields have shown strong growth throughout the forecast.
This forecast is primarily for the packaged LED market. Overall, Bob Steele predicts that in 2010, LED market share will jump 53% to $8.2 billion. By 2014, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of the LED market will increase to 30.6% to reach $20.2 billion.
Strategies Unlimited: 2009-2014 High Brightness LED Market Forecast
Bob Steele said that in 2009, Strategies Unlimited predicted that the LED market would have a 5% decline in 2009. In 2009, the LED auto market segment fell by 18%.
For other application areas, due to the increase in sales of packaged LEDs, the general lighting market segment has driven its market to increase by 24%. Mobile devices are driving LED sales up 2.8%, and mobile devices are the largest application area for high-brightness LEDs.
As far as the actual use of LEDs is concerned, sales of medium-power LEDs soared by 152%, as TV manufacturers mainly used medium-power LEDs. Bob Steele said that in the past, automotive manufacturers have been using medium power LEDs.
Looking ahead, Bob Steele predicts that LED backlighting will continue to emerge in large numbers. He pointed out that some analysts expect that in 2010, LED backlight TV shipments will reach 39 million units. The potential bottlenecks include both the premium of LED-backlit TVs and the potential shortage of LED market supplies.
The notebook display and LCD display market will drive the LED backlight market growth. In the notebook market, in 2009, 50% of the laptops sold used LED backlighting, and by 2010, this number will climb to 80%.
Ordinary lighting is another market with huge growth potential. Overall, Bob Steele said that in 2009, the general lighting market fell by 15%, mainly due to the decline in the construction market. But as mentioned earlier, the LED market for lighting has grown by 24%.
Bob Steele expects a 32% increase in the LED lighting market in 2010. In the next five years, Bob Steele predicts that alternative lights will dominate the market and new LED luminaires will grow slowly. He predicts that the average annual growth rate of LED composites for lighting will reach 44% in the next five years.
