IHS: 2017 Large-size TFT Display Market Increases 6%

According to market research firm IHS Markit (Nasdaq: INFO), the large-size thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) market is expected to continue expanding in 2017, despite slowing demand in the end market.

It is estimated that in 2017, unit shipments will increase by 1% over the previous year to 688 million units. The shipment area in the same period is expected to increase by 6% to 180 million square meters.

In 9-inch and larger displays, the unit shipments of tablet PCs in 2017 will reach the highest value of annual growth, which is an increase of 10% to 93 million. Peter Su, chief analyst at IHS Markit, said: "The reason is that first-line brands are increasing their tablet models with larger screens. The new 10.5-inch iPad pro is a good example."

The second fastest growing application is notebook monitors, which will grow 4% year-on-year to 175 million tablets. "Chinese panel makers are actively trying to expand in this market, and first-line manufacturers are actually evacuating panel production."

On the other hand, due to the slowdown in demand in the terminal market, TV displays will decline by 3% year-on-year to 257 million units in 2017. “The prices of large-size displays, especially TV panels, have remained high for nearly a year. TV brands have started to modify their business plans and reduce panel purchases.”

In terms of shipping area, it is expected that all applications of large-size displays will see an increase in 2017 as the large screen is becoming more and more popular with consumers. The TV display will occupy 78% of the display area, and the 2017 increase is expected to be 5%.

Su said: "First-tier panel makers, especially Korean companies, have begun to shift production to larger sizes - 49 inches or more - while reducing the production of small-size panels with lower profit margins to achieve better financial performance. Chinese panel makers are following and began to increase the production of large-size TVs to 43 inches or more."

From the perspective of panel makers, preparing for potential supply in the near future is another reason behind the migration of television sizes. China's new fab is under construction, including the 10.5 generation line, which may significantly increase supply. "One way for panel manufacturers to overcome oversupply is to increase area consumption through large-scale migration."

LG Display is expected to continue to occupy the largest market share in 2017, with 21% of unit shipments. BOE's shipments increased significantly and it is expected to occupy 20.7% of the total, up 2% from last year.
