New opportunities for LED development: cost improvement aimed at substrates

The high cost of LEDs makes it difficult to significantly reduce the selling price in the market, which makes it difficult for LED lighting to be popularized in ordinary homes. This is the biggest bottleneck encountered by the LED industry. Therefore, the discussion on improving the cost of LED has never stopped. At a recent LEDforum 2012 Taipei seminar, some experts put forward new industry ideas for improving LED cost and process. Among them, the new technology direction of non-sapphire substrate solution (non-sapphire substrate soluTIon) has led to the LED market. Shocked.

Due to cost and electrical considerations, many large manufacturers have begun to use non-sapphire substrate technology to build LEDs. Well-known manufacturers include TSMC SSL, and the combination of Bridgelux in the United States and Toshiba in Japan. In addition, American equipment maker Veeco is quite optimistic about Gan-on-Si's progress and expects 8-inch equipment to be the new focus of the future market. In addition to optimistic about Gan-on-Si, German equipment manufacturer Aixtron also introduced MOCVD equipment and used a higher temperature process to build power supply devices. Some manufacturers have already purchased and entered the power supply market. Japanese equipment factory Dayang Niacin also launched Gan-on-Si's MOCVD equipment products and emphasized a niche market.

In addition, Cree also launched LEDs that do not use sapphire substrate technology, and built LEDs based on SiC, demanding high efficiency. South Korean LED factory Seoul Semiconductor has also introduced the latest nPora technology, which is one of the results of cooperation with Shuji Nakamura, the father of blue LED. It uses Gan-on-Gan technology. There are relatively few manufacturers of such Gan substrates, but there have been The scale of the goods can be more suitable for creating LED chips than traditional sapphire substrates.

In fact, since these new non-sapphire substrates are used to create LEDs, because they are all new technologies, the initial cost should not be effectively reduced significantly. But such a development direction is basically correct, and the non-sapphire substrate solution is also expected to become the next feasible new path for the LED industry. It is worth keeping track.
