Audi has created a VR sandbox driving game that allows you to bring your VR helmet to your own map.

In Audi's real-time virtual reality experience called "Enter Sandbox", a physical installation and immersive driving simulator are combined, allowing you to test your new Audi Q5 on your own sandbox track.

First of all, you have a real world sandbox where you can customize the track. Then carefully scan the sand through the Kinect depth sensing camera to render the virtual world from it. Put the real terrain data in a virtual environment where you can experience the new Audi Q5. Of course, Audi also offers a driving simulator that includes pedals, steering wheel and Oculus Rift heads.

The device was developed by MediaMonks and meets the creative concept of the Audi creative agency POL in Norway. In order to be able to capture each bump and curve, the sand is captured with infrared light and the infrared camera captures more than 200,000 measurement points. This data is then used to create a virtual sandbox 3D model. Once in the car, the driver will feel all the sensibility of real driving, from the feedback of the steering wheel to the actual sound of the Audi Q5.

When you wear headphones, you don't just see the interior of an Audi Q5, you can experience a similar experience to reality. Not only the visual part, but also the feeling of the steering wheel and its feedback, such as when you wheel hit sand feedback.

"Another factor of immersion in VR is audio. So we used the engine sound from the real Audi Q5. Then our sound software showed a realistic and dynamic 3D sound experience," added Johan Ansterus, MediaMonks' VR producer.

Although the idea behind "Enter Sandbox" originated in Norway, the product should eventually be released to other countries.
