However, with the recent news that Sharp will begin production of 8K LCD TVs in the second half of 2018 using the Kameyama Plant, Sharp's “Little 99” finally surfaced.

In fact, this is not the first time that Sharp has expressed its interest in 8K LCD TVs. Previously, Chen Zhenguo, vice president of Foxconn had publicly stated: "Sharp's focus is still on the 8K, because we think 8K is the future." However, there has been news that the company is planning to expand its investment to 100 billion yen (60.6 billion yuan) to manufacture OLED displays for Apple’s next iPhone series. At one time people could not interpret their true intentions.

Now, the truth is finally revealed. In the face of this war between OLED and QLED, Sharp did not end up in the team, but chose 8K LCD TV to open up a new battlefield.

In fact, Sharp has the absolute right to speak in the 8K field and has always been keen to fully promote the 8K display technology. Prior to this, Sharp and Foxconn had invested RMB 61 billion in Zengcheng, Guangzhou to create the 10.5-generation 8K display eco-industrial park with the highest yield and high production capacity in the world. It is clearly intended to open up the 8K market while revamping the supply system of large-size TVs, and hopes to fight OLED TVs by expanding the 8K-related product lineup.

Usually the human eye can see the pixels when it is near the screen of a full HD product. But 8K products can hardly see the pixels no matter how close you are to it. The vivid scenes reproduced in 8K resolution make it almost impossible to tell the difference between images and reality.

This is because the pixels of the 8K TV have reached a resolution of 7,680×4,320 UHD, which is 4 times that of a 4K TV and 16 times that of a 1080P. The clarity of the displayed image can be said to have reached the limit.

Prior to the Rio Olympic Games in 2016, the Japanese NHK broadcasted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil with an image quality of 8K, and relayed games such as swimming and track and field competitions. Recently, it was reported that "NHK will begin broadcasting 8K programs on the BS satellite channel in 2018 and realize the popularity of the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

This undoubtedly provides a good opportunity for the popularization of 8K TVs. With the further expansion of demand in the 8K market, 8K LCD TVs may rise to a market standard. Taking this opportunity, Sharp has the opportunity to focus on the infrastructure construction of the entire broadcast of 8K content production, equipment production, etc. This undoubtedly brings great confidence and hope to Sharp.

In fact, compared to the emerging OLED display technology, Sharp believes that the LCD is more mature and stable. If it can achieve the same level as the OLED screen, it is still very advantageous. This has also become an important reason for its unwavering development of 8K LCD TVs.

At present, Sharp's high-end production line of LCD panels has been relatively complete, and there are a considerable number of production lines. Compared with OLED products, the production capacity of 8K LCD products will be relatively large and the price will be relatively low. With these advantages, if 8K LCD products can be quickly and comprehensively popularized, it may indeed affect the popularity of OLED screens.

However, judging from the development law of the television industry itself, at this stage and even in recent years, 8K LCD TVs are still difficult to promote. The 8K program has many pixels and the amount of data is large, so transmission pressure is also great. Traditional television signal transmission is difficult to bear such a large amount of data. At present, the more mature solution is to rely on satellites, but it is too far away for ordinary consumers, and there is no difference between TVs without program sources and ordinary TVs.

In addition, like the original 4K TV, the prices of 8K LCD TVs are not much cheaper. It is generally matched with an oversized screen and the price is undoubtedly quite exaggerated. Even if it will be cheaper than OLEDs, it is not possible to use them in the consumer-grade field. The only possible direction of development is the commercial sector.

In contrast, OLED TVs have been criticized for the issue of good product rates and price issues. At present, the yield rate of 4K ultra-high-definition OLED TV panels has reached 80%, and it is expected that by 2020, the currently-invested OLED production lines will gradually reach the mature production level. Its high prices are also being improved due to active price adjustments by Skyworth and other companies. With the adjustment of OLED TV prices, OLED TV volume has also increased.

In fact, under the strong promotion of leading companies in the country, the OLED industry has achieved full development in research, production, and learning.
