Quantum dot LED technology begins to affect backlighting and conventional lighting applications

Nanosys aims to target LED backlighting while QD Vision focuses on LED conventional lighting

High-tech LED compiled February 10th news, although LED manufacturers have made great achievements in white LED efficiency, but compared with other lighting technologies, the light output of pure warm white LED is still not ideal. Quantum dot technology can improve the light quality of LED backlights and conventional lighting applications.

A large number of quantum dot technology companies have been established around the world, ranging from lighting, military to biological. Nanosys and QD Vision are preparing to integrate this technology into their products this year.

Nanosys recently announced that LG will market LED backlight display products using quantum dot technology. QD Vision is supplying a reinforced optical component called Quantum Light optic for LED bulbs.

A quantum dot is a crystalline semiconductor. When excited by a photon, the crystal emits light, and the color of the light is determined by the crystal size. So in the visible spectrum, quantum dots can produce any color, and the general LED produces white and green light is problematic.

QD Vision focuses on the lighting market as the company foresees a market that is about to take shape. Co-founder and CTO Seth Coe-Sullivan declared that “the lighting market is fragmented and we have seen many innovative small companies moving forward with us.” Coe pointed out that there are few players in the backlight market, adopting new technologies to mass production products. Very slow.

For companies such as Nexxus, QD Vision will offer lens-type products coated with quantum dot material on the inside. These quantum dot coatings are actually phosphor coatings that improve lamp efficiency and lifetime when the LED is warm white.

Quantum dot applications in backlights are more complicated. The pixels of an LCD display are actually composed of red, green and blue sub-pixels. Each sub-pixel is actually a filter that can only pass wavelengths in a particular band. The source of the backlight must be broadly spectral, covering the red, green and blue bands.

The CCFL source is no problem in generating the necessary spectrum. But in order to save energy, the penetration of LED backlights is increasing, and even LEDs are used in dimming applications in HDTV.

Despite the recent popularity of LED backlighting, this technology is not perfect. Nanosys CEO Jason Hartlove pointed out that the red light spectrum power in the LED backlight is not enough. "You get pink instead of deep red."

Hartlove admits that the use of RGB LEDs can effectively solve the problem of insufficient red light, but he stressed that this TV must use more than 1000 LEDs, the cost is too high.

Quantum dots can improve the quality of LED backlights and reduce costs. Hartlove said: "Our manufacturing process can improve the ability to emit specific spectra, allowing you to fully meet the color requirements of various applications."

Nanosys will provide its technology in the form of QuantumRail lenses, which are placed between the LEDs to conduct light to the screen. Hartlove claims: "We can make a backlight (small size) from a single source of light (such as a blue LED). In fact, a blue LED can be very efficient. Blue light can excite QuantumRail to produce red, green and blue light.

LG has not announced that its products will use Nanosys technology, but Hartlove predicts that it will be adopted this year. Of course, the first product will be used on mobile devices, most likely laptops or mobile phones. Now that the mobile phone has been completely transferred to LED backlighting, the notebook market is also moving in this direction. (Compile / Zeng Cong)
