On March 21, 2018, in Kathmandu, Nepal, humanoid robot Sofia participated in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (Asia and Pacific) Innovation Conference. The purpose of the meeting was to help Nepal find a feasible path for the use of technology and innovation for development. Sofia is the most advanced artificial intelligence robot developed by Hong Kong HansonRobotics and the first humanoid robot to be granted nationality by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. According to a press statement issued by the United Nations Development Programme, Sofia is advocating the UN's sustainable development goals in the Asia Pacific region, with a focus on innovation. At the same time, experts believe that artificial intelligence such as Sofia marks the arrival of the fourth industrial revolution, which will bring about a tremendous shift in technology to solve the difficult problems of development. The press statement stated that with the innovation and development of technologies such as e-education, telemedicine and the Internet, even in remote areas, technological innovation can help local governments provide better public services. At the beginning of the seminar, Sofia made a joke with the host, arguing that the host was unlike the Nepalese actor Anmol KC. During the seminar, Sofia also interacted with the participants as a guest speaker. When asked how AI helped Nepal to provide better public services, Sofia replied, "The opportunity is endless," and added that artificial intelligence can help improve education, develop medical care, and connect Nepal's remote areas with cities. The centers are connected and help Nepal achieve its goal of sustainable development. When asked what she could do as an intelligent robot, Sofia replied that she might be the first non-human to climb Mount Everest. Sofia said in his speech that Nepal’s growing maturity in the technology field will help the country’s overall development, overcome the consequences of the 2015 earthquake and help combat corruption. She welcomed the people gathered to meet her with the warm “Namastey†(a popular etiquette popular in Buddhist countries such as Thailand and Nepal). Due to some major technical issues, Sofia could not interact as planned on the afternoon of the same day. The UNDP Nepalese organizers apologized to all those who came to see her. The conference brought together spokespersons and participants representing the central, provincial and local governments, the private sector, civil society organizations, youth, academia and the media to give them the opportunity to learn and share ideas, experiences and lessons learned in technology development.
