2012 ranking of automotive infotainment manufacturers: NXP has a prominent position

According to IHS 'automotive market report, the major players in the automotive infotainment semiconductor field last year were those with obvious advantages in their respective fields. They have achieved great success in their respective fields.

In 2012, the largest supplier of ASSP semiconductors in the automotive sales and entertainment field was NXP Semiconductors (NXP) in the Netherlands, with operating income of US $ 459 million and a 15% market share. French-Italian company STMicroelectronics ranked second with operating income of US $ 389 million and a market share of 13%. Japan ’s Renesas Electronics ranked third, with operating income only US $ 1 million less than STMicroelectronics, US $ 388 million, and a market share of 13%. The top 10 other manufacturers have operating income ranging from US $ 91 million to US $ 280 million. Overall, the operating revenue of the market was US $ 3.02 billion last year, an increase of 2% from US $ 2.96 billion in 2011.

Through a high degree of focus on their field and target market, major automotive infotainment semiconductor suppliers have gained current prominent status. This strategy not only leads its overall market share ranking, but also ranks in the top three in their respective fields. For example, NXP is extremely powerful in its AM / FM tuner and audio processing field, occupying a 48% market share. Although its share in the overall market was the same as in 2011, its automotive infotainment operating income increased by 2%, ranking first for the second consecutive year.

In contrast, STMicroelectronics ’operating income shrank by 12% due to key customer inventory cuts and delays in the introduction of new products and technologies. Even so, in the same way that every manufacturer succeeds in the target market, STMicroelectronics dominates the audio amplifier and digital / satellite radio tuner and decoder sectors, with market shares as high as 47% and 71%, respectively.

As the revenue of STMicroelectronics declined, Renesas Electronics narrowed the gap with it. Renesas Electronics' operating income increased by 6%. After recovering from the 2011 Japanese tsunami disaster, Renesas currently poses a threat to STMicroelectronics.

Japan ’s Panasonic ranked fourth, with an operating income of US $ 280 million and a market share of 9%. British chip manufacturer CSR ranked fifth, with operating income and market share of US $ 2.12 and 7%, respectively.

The other ten of the top 10 suppliers are Toshiba Japan, Texas Instruments, Freescale, Fujitsu Semiconductor and Rohm Semiconductor.

Other major manufacturers in this field that are not in the top 10 include Nvidia, Intel, Qualcomm and Microchip Technology. In particular, Nvidia successfully applied the multimedia and image processing experience it gained from the consumer field to the automotive field, and initially focused on high-end infotainment brands. Intel is not as successful as NVIDIA, but it also shows its strength. Intel is entering the multimedia field of automotive infotainment through the Atom processor platform.

All manufacturers reporting the performance of the year are strictly ranked according to ASSP sales to the automotive infotainment field. Unlike general-purpose microcontrollers, memory or optical semiconductors, ASSP silicon chips in this field are used to implement AM / FM radio, digital terrestrial and satellite radio, audio amplifiers, GPS and navigation, multimedia logic and connection solutions, such as Bluetooth, Wi -Fi and car network.
