According to reports, Infineon Technologies Bipolar Co., Ltd. has further expanded its lineup of bipolar semiconductor products with the introduction of light-triggered thyristors that enhance system reliability, reduce system cost and simplify the design of ultra-high power applications. Infineon's new 6-inch thyristor is equipped with a reliable light-triggering component that eliminates the need for an external electrical trigger circuit. In addition, overvoltage protection, dv/dt protection, and on-board safety features that prevent forward voltage transients during recovery time further reduce component count and reduce design complexity. Thyristors are ideal for controlling ultra-high currents and voltages because thyristors perform better than IGBT-based voltage source converters (VSC) in terms of on-state losses and symmetrical blocking. Infineon's highly integrated light-triggered thyristors are the first to integrate FRP (Forward Recovery Protection) functionality, in line with the company's strategy to provide system solutions that minimize design costs, increase system reliability and reduce component costs. Light-triggered thyristors (LTTs) are ideal for HVDC transmission. In addition, they are suitable for the design of large-scale grid systems that require different frequencies. The 6-inch LTT features a reverse blocking voltage of 9.5 kV and is designed for steady-state DC currents up to 6,250A. It can handle a maximum inrush current of more than 140kA. These high voltage, current and surge ratings allow designers to meet the needs of a wide range of applications with a single device. In addition, Infineon plans to further increase flexibility in selection and design by introducing 4-inch and 5-inch LTT thyristors with a blocking voltage of 9.5 kV (instead of 8.5 kV).
