Subversion of hybrid vehicles, creating "driving" performance peaking extreme environmentally friendly vehicles

The new car that subverts the hybrid car's "just good fuel efficiency" old calendar will compete in June. Honda and Fuji Heavy Industries have improved the system so that the running performance of hybrid vehicles exceeds that of gasoline vehicles. As the battle for environmentally friendly vehicles intensifies, companies will use "driving" performance as a selling point and strive to expand their share of the world.

Honda President Ito Takao announced on May 16 that the company will return to the world's highest level of F1 car racing. For the reason, Ito said, "This is to extend the technology accumulated in the field of racing to mass-produced cars."

Honda will first realize this concept on the hybrid car, a representative player of environmentally friendly vehicles. The Accord Hybrid, which will be launched on June 21st, is from the hands of technicians who have developed F1 racing engines. The F1 cars they participated in have been in service until 2008. The reason why Honda hires racing talents is to create a new hybrid car with good fuel efficiency performance and the "driving" performance to the peak.

Responsible for the development of power transmission systems such as engines and motors is Yusuke Nagayagawa, Director of the 5th Technology Development Office. From 2002 to 2008, Hasegawa has been engaged in the development of F1 engines, etc., and has run all major race tracks around the world. According to Hasegawa, "The driving data analysis methods developed in F1 development are all applied to system development."

This time, Honda has developed three hybrid systems including the system used by the Accord. These systems will be successively equipped in new cars that will be launched in 2013.

Japanese companies have been leading the world in hybrid vehicle technology, and Toyota plays a leading role. Taking Toyota's "Prius" as a representative, so far, the focus of hybrid vehicles has always been "good fuel efficiency." Honda named the hybrid system developed this time as "hybrid sports car". Prior to this, Honda also produced hybrid vehicles, but after the sales volume was lower than Toyota, it was not noticeable in the market. This time, the company intends to use the driving performance as a weapon, and strive to get ahead.

Honda's previous hybrid system for the small car "Insight" was called "IMA". This system has a simple structure and is equipped with only one motor to assist the engine. The purpose of the company's development of IMA is to reduce the cost gap with gasoline vehicles to a minimum while improving fuel efficiency, and to win the market by defeating Toyota Prius in cost competitiveness.

The characteristic of Honda's newly developed system this time is that it relies more on electric power. Strong torque can be generated at low speeds, and the motor's response to throttle operation is more sensitive than that of the engine, enabling agile and flexible driving performance.

The impression of "steady driving" of the past hybrid cars seems to be swept away. The system is divided into 3 types according to the number of equipped motors.

One motor for acceleration and power generation

Among them, the first to be listed is the "i-MMD" equipped with the Accord hybrid. i-MMD is equipped with 2 motors, one for acceleration and one for power generation.

Its characteristic is that it only uses the acceleration motor when accelerating and does not depend on the power of the engine. During this period, the engine drives another generator motor to supply the electric energy generated by the motor to the travel motor. The remaining energy is stored in the battery. Compared with engine acceleration, acceleration performance and energy saving performance are superior.

Moreover, the Accord hybrid car also uses electric servo brakes that can regenerate energy during deceleration with higher efficiency. Coupled with the help of the highly efficient Atkinson cycle engine, fuel efficiency soared to 30km per liter in one fell swoop. It surpassed Toyota's "Camry" hybrid electric vehicle.

"SH-AWD" is a top-level system equipped with a total of 3 motors. As scheduled, the system will be equipped in the RLX of the high-end car brand "Acura" and will be launched in North America in the second half of 2013.
