TI TIDA-01168 Two-Way Automotive 12V (48V) Power System Reference Design

TI's TIDA-01168 is a four-phase bi-directional automotive 12V/48V power system reference design with two LM5170-Q1 current controllers and TMS320F28027F microcontroller (MCU), 12V input voltage range of 6V-18V, 48V input voltage range of 24V -54V, with reverse polarity, overcurrent and overvoltage and over temperature protection, multiphase upgradeable option, output power 2kW, efficiency 97%, mainly used in 12V/48V automotive power distribution, super capacitor or battery backup power converter . The lm5170-q1 controller provides the necessary high precision automotive 48 V and 12 vdual battery system dual channelbidirecTIonal conversion components. It regulates the average current between the high voltage and low voltageports specified by the DIR input. The current regulatory level is programmed to analog or digital PWM inputs.

Dual differential current sense amplifiers and dedicated channel current monitors achieve 1% typicalcurrent accuracy. Robust 5-A half-bridge gatedrivers are capable of driving parallel MOSFETswitches delivering 500 W or more per channel. Diode emulation mode of synchronous rectifiersprevents negative current also makes discontinuous mode operation efficiency increase light load. Multi-function protection function cycle-by-cycle current limit includecycle overvoltage protection, high voltage low voltage port, MOSFET fault detection over temperature protection.

An innovative average current mode control schememaintains constant closed loop gain allows a single r-cnetwork to compensate for buck and boostconversion. The oscillator can be adjusted to 500 kHz to synchronize with an external clock. The multiphaseparallel operation is achieved by connecting the twolm5170-q1 controller 3 and four operations, or synchronizing multiple controller phase shifted clocks to a higher number of stages. Low state UVLO pin disables lm5170-q1 at low

Current shutdown mode.

Reference Design TIDA-01168

The tida-01168 reference design is a four-stage, two-way DC-DC converter development platform for 12 V/48 V automotive systems. The system uses two lm5170-q1 current controllers and one tms320f28027f microcontroller (MCU) for power stage control. The lm5170-q1 system uses the average current feedback of the control current while the C2000TM microcontroller provides voltage feedback. This control scheme eliminates the typical phase current balance of a multiphase converter. The lm5170-q1 system allows for high levels of integration, reducing printed circuit board (PCB) area, simplifying design, and accelerating development.
